Bormio , January 4, 2014 – The Alpine Ski World Cup is at home in Bormio. It is right on the Stelvio. In fact, it has no longer moved away from here after the classic Valtellina DH at the end of the year that was dominated by the Norwegian Aksel Svindal that the Stelvio who is madly in love with Stelvio just like he once was with Julia Mancuso. Tomorrow, then, the final part of the course (where Christof Innerhofer raced so fast) will be the spot where the fourth slalom of the season will take place. Tomorrow it’s the Ladies turn and the day after, at night, the Men’s time with Marcel Hirscher running through the poles to get the Viking who is not that near in the World Cup anymore. Svindal is the leader with 195 points ahead of the racer from Salzburg and 301 of Ted Ligety.

The men’s and women’s SL World Cup is back on the Stelvio after nearly six years: in fact, in mid-March 2008, Bormio successfully hosted the World Cup Finals of all specialties. However, it doesn’t look like it’s been over five years since then, especially if we think of the Ladies’ SL won by Marlies Schild who that very same day, at the beginning of spring, won also the first of his four SL Cups. Schild got the title of Mrs. of SL even thought she was still a Miss, at least until the great Benjamin Raich finally decided to marry her. With the fourth victory in Lienz the legendary girlfriend of the Austrian champion has in fact become the skier who has won the largest number of slaloms in the history of ski: thirty-five, one more than the Swiss Vreni Schneider. Starting with hat of Sestriere in March 2004. With Ital , after Austria, in the heart – and Valtellina in particular. It’s the place where she dominated in Bormio 2008 and also in the January 2005 SL in Santa Caterina. And Marlies Schild will be tomorrow on a wet Stelvio prepared by the three working groups of the wonderful team by Massimo Rinaldi. She is the favorite of the two runs of 9.30am and 12,30pm. Let’s hope the course gets icy in the night and that tomorrow – under the snow – the visibility will be good from the little house in the wood until the finish line in the town of Bormio.

It’s clear that the bookmakers too think Schild is the favourite with 2.20 (Shiffrin is 3.25, Maria Riesch 6.50 and the fallen queen, Tina Maze , 21). But the bookmakers can be wrong sometimes and the new Olympic year couldn’t start any better in Bormio with a generational challenge between the two leading SL Ladies separated by fourteen years and a few accidents. The wonderful Austrian racer became 32 on May 31, while Mikaela Shiffrin was born in Vail, Colorado on March 13, 1995. But the last season our not even eighteen Shirley Temple on the slopes, taking advantage of the serious problems with Schild’s right knee that kept her away all winter became the World SL champion after the successes in Are, Zagreb, Flachau and the Lenzerheide Finals.
