Peter Fill: we are the favourite ones, and I’m the first one of us

Peter Fill - Bormio Downhill World CupResults list here

di Claudio Pea

Bormio , December 27, 2013 - While it was rainy in Bormio yesterday, over there in Bormio 2000 it snowed a lot. More than half a metre in just a few hours. And so the organizers decided to lower the start of about a hundred meters, i.e. at La Rocca, two gates down from Praimont. The times of the first Bormio Downhill World Cup training are therefore under two minutes. And so it will be the same tomorrow, for the second training, and most likely the day of the race too, on December 29 as usual from twenty years now. To point it out even better Bode Miller won in 2007 on the Stelvio with 2’00”57 and the year after Christof Innerhofer was first with 2’03”55. While this morning – under a blue painted sky marked only by the signatures of the drone and the jets – the fastest one was him, Innerhofer from Brunico, who finished with 1’53”93 on a track that will be faster on Sunday.

It’s hard to choose who’s the nicest of the Azzurri. For example, the optimism of Peter Fill – the best one among the italjet team this season – it’s definitely contagious as well as fun. Speaking of those who may be the favorites of Bormio Downhill he looked surpires at us and said: “Well, Italy for sure, and me in particular!” And what about the description of the Stelvio by Innerhofer? “In the first part it felt like winter snow, fresh and tender, while in the second part it looked like spring and it’s where I enjoyed it like crazy, on the ice with all those sharp and very technical bends.” From Carcentina down Christof was a missile, and he was second only to Bode Miller in the jump near the finish area (Bode, who could not do bad in presence of his beautiful wife.)

Most of the athletes taking part in the Bormio Downhill event arrived in Bormio yesterday and pretty sure that they were going to miss today’s training because of the heavy snowfalls that have knocked out half part of the Alps That’s what Aksel Lund Svindal thought as well – the leader of the World Cup who, however, is really the number one on all types of snows and slopes. Even today – with a 3rd place. “The Bormio Downhill organizers must have done a miracle in the night if the track was almost perfect and very pleasant for me in the morning.”

Peter Fill’s optimism – third Beaver Creek podium both in  downhill and super-G  – is enhanced by today’s results of the other Azzurri. We have already spoken about Innerhofer – first before Miller and Svindal. Immediately after them Peter Fill and a surprising Silvano Varettoni, 4th place with the same time. And Werner Heel is 9th.
