Sunday, December 29: the Bormio 2013 Downhill show

BORMIO (SONDRIO), OCTOBER 16, 2013 - Last winter’s champion in Bormio was Dominik Paris , the 24 years old runner up in Schladming 2013, a cool and fun guy who always has a guitar in his hands and comes from a valley in South Tyrol called Val d’Ultimo (Ultimo in Italian means last or latest). Well, last is not a word that suits Paris, as with his impressive style he’s abslutely considered the natural heir of Cristian Ghedina for what downhill is concerned as well as “the Italian skier” (along with Christof Innerhofer) of the next Olympic Games in Sochi - Russia.

The 2013 edition of the downhill race in  Bormio was in fact one of the most extraordinary and exciting of the entire 2012-2013 World Cup. Just think of the exceptional order of arrival with Dominik Paris sharing the podium with the Austrian skier Hannes Reichelt with exactly the same time, followed by the Norwegian Aksel Svindal – the winner of the downhill World Cup – just 0.01 seconds behind and Klaus Kroell 0.02 seconds behind.

This year, the traditional race taking place on December 29 on the fantastic Stelvio slope will be on Sunday and, therefore, the organizers expect more people coming to Bormio from all the Alps, particularly fans who will support their favourite skiers from the grand stands in the heart of the town (it doesn’t happen anywhere else in the world). And there is no other place where the start of a men’s downhill World Cup race coincides with a place from where you can pretty much see the finish area without using binoculars or telescopes.

Yet, the wonderful Stelvio slope in Bormio is just “pure adrenaline”, just like the stars and stripes skier Daron Rhalves – who won here in 2002 - once defined it; it’s in your veins for about two minutes, in and out of the woods , along the canalino Sertorelli and then across Carcentina. Jumping, flying and holding your breath during a show that you simply can’t miss - when the old year is about to greet the new one coming.
